How does the type of Florida home change a rodent inspection?

A detached house, a unit in a large building and a mobile home each hide their entry gaps in different spots.

Mobile homes: check the skirting and floor openings.

In a detached house, walk the roofline first, then the branches and shrubs that touch the walls, the foundation, the utility lines and the garage door seals.

In an apartment or condo building, report droppings or noises to the manager or association as well, so the trash room, shared walls and utility chases can be checked along with your unit.

Florida FAQs About Rats and Mice

  • How far can a roof rat jump?

UF/IFAS Extension says the roof rat can jump three feet vertically and more than four feet horizontally. Keep that reach in mind when deciding how far back to cut branches and palm fronds from the roof.

Source: UF/IFAS Extension, Ask IFAS, accessed 2026

  • Can rats climb into a Florida attic?

Yes. UF/IFAS Extension's archived 2013 rat and mouse fact sheet says rats, especially roof rats, will climb anything their claws can hold, including wires, pipes and rough walls. The attic rodent removal page explains what clearing and sealing an attic involves.

  • Do palm trees and yard fruit attract rodents?

They can. UF/IFAS Extension says fallen palm fruit may attract rodents, so pick it up often. The same guidance says fully enclosed compost bins are much less attractive to rodents and suggests rodent-proof bird feeders.

  • Does a newer Florida house still need sealing?

Yes. Census ACS 5-year estimates put 32.3% of Florida housing units at 2000 or later and 33.7% at 1980 to 1999. A recent build still has vents, pipe openings and a garage door, and any of them can be left with a gap.

  • Is rat lungworm found in Florida?
