Rodent Questions Answered: Rats and Mice FAQ
The questions people ask most once they spot droppings or hear scratching, answered in a few sentences each from CDC, FDA and university extension sources. Each one links the guide that goes deeper.
How small a hole can a mouse or rat squeeze through?
A mouse needs a hole only about as wide as a pencil, roughly 1/4 inch, and a rat can get through a gap of about 1/2 inch. If a pencil slides into a gap, treat it as a way in.1,5
If I see one mouse, are there more?
Often, yes. House mice tend to stay within about 30 feet of their nest, so a mouse you see is usually living close by, and CDC treats droppings, urine spots or gnawing that keep turning up after a week as a sign of an infestation.6,2
Will mice or rats leave on their own?
Not while the house still gives them what they came for. CDC notes that rodents are drawn to food, water and easy places to nest, so the fix is to remove those and close the way in.1
How can I tell mouse droppings from rat droppings?
Size is the quickest test. House mouse droppings average about 1/4 inch long, while Norway rat droppings can reach 3/4 inch with blunt ends.8,9
Can I just sweep or vacuum up droppings?
No. CDC says not to sweep or vacuum rodent droppings, urine or nests, because disease spreads mainly through contaminated air. Soak them with disinfectant first, then wipe them up with gloves on.3
Are traps or poison better inside the house?
Traps. CDC recommends traditional snap traps around the home, and UC IPM notes that mice stay close to home, so poisoned mice often die inside the building.2,6
Can a rat really come up through the toilet?
Yes, though it is uncommon. UC IPM says rats can swim through sewers and come into buildings through toilets or broken drains, and Norway rats are the stronger swimmers.7
What does a rat hole in the yard look like?
ICWDM describes Norway rat burrow openings as usually 2 to 3 inches across and worn smooth. Seeing rats out in daylight means there are a lot of them.10
What can rats and mice chew through?
More than most people expect. An ICWDM construction guide lists plastic, vinyl, rubber and fiberglass among the materials they can gnaw through, which is why gaps get sealed with metal, cement or hardware cloth.11,1
Do I have to throw out food a mouse may have touched?
Food in paper, cardboard or plastic packaging goes in the trash, FDA says. Undamaged metal cans and sealed glass jars can be kept after you clean and sanitize them.12
How soon after rodent exposure would I get sick?
For hantavirus, CDC says symptoms usually start 1 to 8 weeks after contact with an infected rodent. If you get a fever or trouble breathing after a cleanup, see a doctor and say you were around rodents.4
Why do rats chew car wiring?
Parked cars give rodents shelter, and UC IPM notes rats often gnaw the insulation on engine wires, which can lead to costly repairs. CDC adds that vehicles used infrequently are the most likely to get nests.7,3
